Pre-trek FAQs
Wanted to take a moment to cover a handful of the questions that have come up over the last few weeks. Here’s what’s about to go down:
How long is the PCT and where are you starting?
The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCT) is 2,650 miles long. I plan to hike the entire length of the trail, from the starting point at the Mexican border to the ending point at the Canadian border (minus the high Sierras due to this year’s snowpack).
How long will it take?
My permit is valid until the end of October – averaging 15 miles/day (this estimate factors in “zero days” to rest), it should take me a little under 6 months to complete.
Are you going alone?
I am hiking solo (as in, I’m not going WITH a friend), but – like many PCT thru-hikers – I hope to connect with new trail friends along the way and complete sections of the hike with other hikers going at a complimentary pace.
What precautions are you taking to stay safe?
I have the essential emergency gear in my kit, with probably the most important item being a satellite communicator that will ping Joseph (my husband) every 30 minutes with my location and has the capability to send an SOS signal should I need it.
What is Joseph going to do while you’re gone?
Short answer: Whatever he wants! We love each other very much and we make an amazing team, but I’m also pretty sure 6 months of alone time is the best birthday present I could ever give my sweet introvert husband. He’ll be plenty busy building his business, tending to the animals, and doing all sorts of awesome ranch projects all summer (seriously, he should be the one blogging – his life is going to be WAY more interesting than walking 20 miles a day over and over again for the length of the continental US), and of course holding down the fort with all our financial responsibilities while I wander and eat snacks for half a year.
What about the snow?
Yeah, about that. There’s no way I’m taking on the high Sierras. I will do as much of the trail as I can before it’s completely socked in and then skip that section (you know, the most iconic and beautiful part of the damn thing).
Can I join you for a portion?
Yes. 1000 times, yes.
