The Devil’s in the Details (My Gear List)

The Devil’s in the Details (My Gear List)

Before I launch into what is sure to be a series of heartfelt manifestos about why I am doing this and how I got to this point in my life, let’s nerd out a little bit on the gear.

Disclaimer: I’m posting this summary prior to hitting the trail and expect the setup to evolve over time. Most decisions were made based on a combination of internet research, former hiker gear guides, and the advice of friends who have either completed the trail or have expertise in mountaineering and backpacking (also special thank you to the lovely staff at REI locations throughout California, Washington, and Oregon, who so graciously answered so many of my questions).

The Main Staples – Pack, Shelter, and Sleep System:

Pack: Aerios 45 Pack - Women's - Arc'teryx (2.25lbs)

Really great, minimal ultra-light pack. There are lots of other excellent options out there that are not available at REI, but for my first big trip it was important for me to have the chance to try on a few options and decide based on what fit my body best. This pack was by far the most comfortable for me.

Tent: Duplex Tent – Zpacks (1.16lbs)

This was one of the more expensive investments in my kit, and was hard to choose initially, but I’m very happy I went with my gut (and the advice of some friends). It is super light, durable, waterproof, and easy to setup with my trekking poles. I spent a couple nights in it at the top of our property and it is awesome.

Sleeping Pad: Tensor Ultralight Insulated Sleeping Pad – NEMO (0.94lbs)

I mostly got suckered in by the inflation sack. Technology is amazing.

Quilt: Revelation Quilt 850fp 10 degree - Enlightened Equipment (0.99lbs)

I went with a quilt that didn’t have a sewn up footbox (just a zipper) so I could use it also as a blanket when I need it.

Pillow: Fillo Elite Pillow – NEMO (0.19lbs)

Everything Else:

Wearables:

Tech:

Utility/Emergency:

Health/Hygiene:

Total weight of my setup (not including food and water): <15lbs

Fully loaded with a week’s worth of food and 6 liters of water: ~32lbs
